Rural Alberta Co-ops Creating New Tourism Destinations

In Alberta’s badlands region, a tourism association is helping start cultural co-ops to increase tourism and economic opportunities for artists.

Bob Davis, Canadian Badlands travel and tourism executive director, says a grant from Rural Alberta Development Fund has helped the association support the founding of two artist co-ops, with another currently in the planning process.

Co-op members’ art is sold in the Hive’s retail space.

In Medicine Hat, an artist’s collective called the Hive has become a dynamic space for artists to work in a studio spaces, and sell their craftsmanship in the co-op’s retail store. Since opening three years ago, the Hive has expanded, moving its retail store to a higher traffic area, while opening up more artist studio space in its current location...
