ARDN Provides Volunteer and Work Experience to U of A Students

Bookmark and Share

The Alberta Rural Development Network (ARDN) is participating with the University of Alberta (U of A) to give students an opportunity to volunteer and gain real life work experience.

The Community Service-Learning (CSL) program through the U of A gives students the opportunity to participate in the activities of a community agency or social action group through a university course. The students who participate in this program use their education to benefit local communities and realize the possible applications of their classroom experiences.

ARDN would like introduce you to our volunteers: Chase McGowan and Hala Moraich who are enrolled in Communication Theory and Practice in the Faculty of Agriculture, Life, and Environmental Sciences (ALES). The course covers the principles of professional communication.  Chase and Hala will assist ARDN with communications related projects, including: compiling informational portfolio packages about ARDN, interviewing and writing articles about important rural figures for the ARDN Rural Connector newsletter, and assisting with the promotion of ARDN’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Creating Rural Connections 2011 conference.

Chase is in his second year of study of Animal Health in ALES. He volunteers with several organizations, including the Humane Society and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton. In his free time he likes to run competitively, play soccer, and read.

Hala is in her second year of study at the U of A and is majoring in Nutrition. She volunteers at the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and the Dickensfield Extended Care Hospital.  Despite the challenges of balancing an academic life with her volunteer and work experience, she enjoys the sense of accomplishment that comes from overcoming those challenges.

Everyone at ARDN is looking forward to working with Chase and Hala during the fall term.
