Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) has approved nearly $800,000 to support rural and remote Alberta communities during the COVID-19 Pandemic. These funds will be allocated to projects supporting marginalized groups, who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless, who may be experiencing increased hardship due to the pandemic.
In order to support needs in multiple areas, it is likely that no more than ~$25,000 will be approved for each project application. However, we may consider requests for higher levels of funding, if the proposed activities and expenditures correspond with a heightened need in the community.
Project activities must take place outside of the seven largest centres in Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer). Successful applicants will be required to report on the impact of the funding on their community when the money has been spent and the activities are completed. All allocated funding must be spent and reported on before March 31, 2021.
Q: Are on-reserve communities/organizations eligible to apply for this funding?
Q: Will expenses previously incurred be eligible for reimbursement?
A: Yes, any expenses incurred on or following April 1st, 2020 will be eligible for reimbursement, provided that the expenses are eligible, and your application is successful.
Q: What vulnerable populations does this funding intend to support?
A: This funding specifically aims to support the homeless or those at risk of becoming homeless as a result of COVID-19.
Q: The application asks for applicants to provide details such as statistics. What do you mean by statistics?
A: We recognize that not every rural and remote community will have access to statistics, such as # of COVID-19 cases, # of homeless etc... We also acknowledge that needs will vary across communities. We just ask that applicants provide us with as much contextual information as possible. For example, an applicant could discuss any increases (or decreases) in numbers of residents accessing services due to covid-19. Numbers and/or a detailed description would help us understand community priorities and needs.
